Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

MBSR is a program that was created by Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn through the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre. It is designed to help people develop skills to notice and change "automatic pilot" patterns that can cause and often add to the stress in our lives. From its inception and first applications, the staff and faculty at the UMASS Medical Centre recognized the importance of this program as a part of patient care.

Mindfulness allows us to pay attention to our moment to moment experience in a way that acknowledges the nature of our automatic judgements. This can enable us to see our lives from a wider perspective and make informed responses rather than unhelpful reactions that add to the stressors in our lives. Using straightforward, practical language and experiential learning, the classes help participants build mindfulness through a variety of guided meditations. There is also gentle movement component that promotes care of the body through stretching exercises that can be adjusted to all physical abilities.

MBSR has been the subject of a great deal of research in the fields of medicine, mental health and neuroscience. It has been shown to positively effect a range of autonomic physiological processes, such as lowering blood pressure and reducing overall arousal and emotional reactivity. (Please refer to the brief attached list of citations).

MBSR is offered in a group setting over 8 weeks. Each weekly session is approximately 2 1/2 hours long. There is a full day of mindfulness offered during the 8 week course that allows participants an opportunity to hone their new skills in supported safe environment. While sharing of observations during class is encouraged it is not required, making this program accessible for those that are curious about stress management but don't believe that talk therapy is right for them.

Class sizes are currently limited to 8 participants. Classes are appropriate for individuals 18 and over who are interested in finding a practical way to reduce and relate to the stressors in their lives. Cost of the full course is $350 per participant.

The next session will begin on Monday September 18, 2017 . Class will be held from 6:00-8:30 pm at Fenwick Psychological and Health Services, Suite 314, 5595 Fenwick Street. A MBSR orientation session for this and subsequent sessions will be held on September 11th at 6:30 pm in the same location.

If you are interested in learning more about how MBSR can help or to book your spot, I would be happy to speak with you.
